Not illustrated. 1910 Excerpt: ... of the times, from the standpoint of lawyer and layman alike, is that bar associations throughout the country are awakening to a sense of their responsibility and are taking active steps to insure the selection of fit men for judicial positions. A recent and notable instance of the tendency in this direction is afiorded by the action of the New York State Bar Asso-ciation in providing for a committee of its members to pass upon the fitness and qualifications of candidates for judicial oflice throughout the State. The President of the Association, Adelbert Moot, Esq., in ap-pointing the committee, stated that the committee was created, among other reasons, because of the existence of a belief that where any political party becomes so strong in any district, city or county that a nomination is practically equivalent to election, improper personal and political considerations sometimes influence the domi-nant political organization to select candidates without regard to their personal fitness. To some extent these remarks will be deemed applicable to a situation which has existed in New York County. Brznon AND Baa willingly yields the point that most of the judges sitting in New York County are honest, able and conscientious; but it cannot be denied that this is the fact, not because of the system used in selecting the judges, but in spite of it. We Americans are an adaptable people, and possess, for the most part, a wholesome sense of honor and the obligations of duty. Our history seems to justify the assertion that selection to an ofiice of trust or responsi-bility tends to bring out the best there is in a man, and that he usually develops suificient strength to meet the emergencies which confront him, unless he is a hopeless moral derelict.
